It bonds wood to the subfloor while letting the wood move, and it handles conditions that ruin standard PVA or acrylic adhesives.

It is not meant for carpet. Please don't use 977 for carpet.

Amorphous vs. crystalline polymers: the hidden variable

Most liquid adhesives and sealants rely on amorphous polymer behavior because they need to cure into a film at room temperature. Crystalline polymers show up in plastics, fibers, and sheet membranes. What is flex additive?

Grace is known for bituminous sheet membranes, like Bituthene, that are pre-formed and adhered in sheets. Mapei makes fluid-applied membranes, like Mapelastic AquaDefense, that are rolled or troweled on as one continuous layer.

Comparing them honestly:

  • Sheet membranes (Grace-style) have factory-controlled thickness and a proven track record on big foundations, but seams need careful lapping and details take time.
  • Fluid-applied membranes (Mapei-style) are seamless, fast on irregular details, and easy to coat corners, but the final thickness depends on the applicator.

For an emergency repair, I usually reach for fluid-applied because there are no seams and the cure is fast. For a large foundation where the spec names a sheet membrane, follow the spec.
